TWO EVILS (11 TRACK CD REVIEW)
THE REVENANT DEAD
The album starts off with 'Atrophy', all death metal, growling vocals and really heavy guitar riffs. But then we get to 'Shallow Grave' and suddenly we have the singer really singing and the band now sounds like ..Pantera.. meets The Sisters Of Mercy! Strange as it may sound, it really works. The production on this album, by the way, is superb, not unlike the sound you get on the aforementioned Sisters Of Mercy's 'Floodland' album. Nowhere does it show more than on the track 'The Dead Is Here' - it's more like a theme song, as it's more like symphonic rock with droning synths in the background, loud riffing guitars and that dual vocal growl. That Andrew Eldritch vocal styling gives The Revenant Dead an almost schizophrenic sound on this big production number. With a title like 'Requiem' you would think it would be slow paced, but this is taken at a modest rocking pace - well, for The Revenant Dead anyway! Another outstanding track is a great pop-sounding Goth rocker called 'Goldmine' and then 'Morphine' slows things right down...well, it would, wouldn't it? Slowed down for only a minute or so before they start rocking it up again, sounding not unlike ..Metallica... 'Desolution'', for me, is where they really shine as a first class 21st century ..rock band... Throughout the album there's some classic rock guitar playing mixed with great lyrics and the amazing production makes it a modern rock classic in the making. This has got to be one of the best albums released this year.
